Poetry #85
(published Early, 2002)
Santa Cruz
by John Sakkis

The person with the pink
Walking along a
boardwalk at night
whistling americana,
kicking a Cracker Jack
box ahead of him.
Vicki showed
them how to
sport their socks.
Her hair is California
Swiming with those
people or holding
hands in this
water; it's a
cold (and dirty)
template to wade
through when
twelve years old
and your left
testicle keeps
ending up closer
and closer to
her stomach.
