We had a pair of goldfish, one
male one female, we were told, who
would swim in their five gallon world
most of the time. They ate little flecks
of food if they were given the chance.
They didn't do too much except that
all day. They never fought in
the hallway or slammed the door against
the madness it separated. If they
cried all day there were no hints of
it in the quiet water. But eventually
the female - her eyes bigger and more
beautiful - left her small little
tank and I've never felt as sad
in my entire life as when I saw
him stewing in his room all alone.
