Ant People
by Graham Catt

they are eating like ants shovelling ant food
                                                                    into ant mouths

jaws scissoring, antenna twitching

there are blue collar ants
                                      white collar ants

and soldier ants
                       with truncheons and guns

one ant reads a newspaper
                                            another sweeps the floor

and there is an ant wearing
                                           a boob-tube and platform sneakers

out in the street
                         they are marching like ants

they chatter like ants, laugh like ants
                                                          I join them

my feet scuffing the laminex
a lump of sugar under my arm

and I wonder if
                        from a distance

we look like people
