Poetry #137
(published June 5, 2003)
Displacement (from Seven More Poems the Road Gave Up, part 4 of 7)
by Tom Sheehan

What happens on a round smooth stone
is hands, fingers of old voices, dust, bones,
sunlight falling in May, the terrible heel
December has,
talents of witches in the nightcry and oblivion
of dark winds. What happens on around smooth
bone is loam-eat and rushing waters and effluvium
decay spreads
and a bite of blue-gray hardpan tougher than prom-
ises. When the hands and the earth are trussed,
what melts away begins.
