Former Faith-Based Initiatives officer arrested for running prostitute-review website

TPM: News Pages | Talking Points Memo | Police: Ohio man ran hooker-review Web site

Robert Eric McFadden is accused of trading information about online escorts and prostitutes who worked the streets, including a 17-year-old girl. Police say he also helped organize a $10-a-ticket raffle that offered an evening with a prostitute.

The 46-year-old McFadden was arrested Wednesday and faces numerous charges, including compelling prostitution involving a minor.

McFadden formerly served as director of the Faith-Based and Community Initiatives office under Gov. Ted Strickland. He was transferred to a job with the state prisons department in 2007 and laid off in March 2008 due to budget cuts.

Israel bombs UN headquarters

Israeli forces shell UN headquarters in Gaza

Israel shelled the United Nations headquarters in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, engulfing the compound and a warehouse in fire and destroying thousands of pounds of food and humanitarian supplies intended for Palestinian refugees.

U.N. workers and Palestinian firefighters, some wearing bulletproof jackets, struggled to douse the flames and pull bags of food from the debris after the Israeli attack, which was another blow to efforts to ease the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Dense smoke billowed from the compound.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who is in the region to end the devastating offensive against Gaza's Hamas rulers, demanded a "full explanation" and said the Israeli defense minister told him there had been a "grave mistake."

The graph of linguistic incomprehensibility

Language Log -- The directed graph of stereotypical incomprehensibility

When an English speaker doesn't understand a word one says, it's "Greek to me". When a Hebrew speaker encounters this difficulty, it "sounds like Chinese". I've been told the Korean equivalent is "sounds like Hebrew".

Has there been a study of this phrase phenomenon, relating different languages on some kind of Directed Graph?

Letter to Oprah: My Holocaust Memoir

Shouts & Murmurs: My Holocaust Memoir: Humor: The New Yorker

Dear Ms. Winfrey:

I am a great admirer of your show, and, while I do not watch every day, when I do watch I am always touched in or near my heart. Recently, I was watching “Best Life Week,” in which your guests discussed the challenges that they have overcome, and it occurred to me that the events of my early life, which are the subject of an upcoming book I have just completed, might be perfect for a future episode. I do not expect you to read the entire book, but I wanted to take a moment to review some of the highlights—though “highlights” is a crass, commercial word for such a wrenching memoir.

. . .

These are the rough outlines of my story, but there are plenty of other details that are sure to entrance and bewitch the average reader—the time I played second base for the Yankees, the time aliens landed in front of the Panzerspähwagen and tried to abduct (and presumably probe) Bradshaw—not to mention film and television executives looking for heartwarming stories of human will and undying love. I know that your lawyers are paid to be suspicious, and I understand. But I can assure you that Terry Bradshaw is a Gypsy. I look forward to your thoughts on “Back-Door Man,” and what is sure to be a fruitful creative partnership.
