NYC cops escort 700 protesters across Brooklyn bridge, then turn and arrest them

Police Arrest More Than 700 Protesters on Brooklyn Bridge - NYTimes.com
“Protesters who used the Brooklyn Bridge walkway were not arrested,” Paul J. Browne, the chief spokesman for the New York Police Department, said. “Those who took over the Brooklyn-bound roadway, and impeded vehicle traffic, were arrested.” But many protesters said they believed the police had tricked them, allowing them onto the bridge, and even escorting them partway across, only to trap them in orange netting after hundreds had entered. “The cops watched and did nothing, indeed, seemed to guide us onto the roadway,” said Jesse A. Myerson, a media coordinator for Occupy Wall Street who marched but was not arrested. . . .

FBI to expand definition of rape for the first time in 80 years

They will finally include men who get raped, people who get raped in non-vaginal areas, and people who are drugged or unconscious while raped. FBI Will Revise Narrow Definition Of Rape To Correct Mass Underreporting Of Sexual Assaults | ThinkProgress
The New York Times reports that the FBI is planning to revise its official definition of rape after more than 80 years of using an antiquated definition that drastically underestimates the number of sexual assaults every year. Currently, the FBI defines rape as “the carnal knowledge of a female, forcibly and against her will” — which completely excludes male rape and discounts cases that involve anal or oral penetration, penetration with an object, and cases where the victims were drugged or under the influence.

New York cops viciously attack peaceful Wall Street protesters (with video)

So all week there has been this Occupy Wall Street protest going on. The protest is about the obvious problems with bailing out Wall Street while cutting services to everyone else in the country. People have been peacefully protesting in police-mandated protest zones, behind orange fencing. But the cops have been getting restless. Two days ago a guy who was putting a tarp over his belongings to protect them from getting wet was picked up by police--bodily picked up--and slammed face first into the ground. His face did not look very good afterwards. And yesterday police walked up to a group of women who could not have been more peaceful and pepper-sprayed them in the face and arrested them. Video below. This is not how we should treat protesters. Did this EVER happen to Tea Party protesters? No. No it did not. The first amendment guarantees our right to speech, to assembly, to peaceable protest. What these thug cops are doing is abhorrent. They should all be prosecuted and fired. Joe. My. Kansas City cop accused of raping teenage girl after finding her out past curfew

If anyone can give me a reason why we should ever trust police officers I'm willing to hear it. Teen Girl Forced to Give Cop Oral Sex -- What the Sick Abuse of Authority Says About Our Rape Culture | | AlterNet
. . . Over Labor Day weekend, a chilling story came to light in Kansas City, Missouri. The court case arose out of a culture of police negligence around questionable sexual behavior, a culture that eventually led to a horrific assault on a young girl, a teen who was hanging out late in a park with her friends. A teen-age girl says a Jackson County police officer forced her to give him oral sex in his squad car after he found her and some friends in a park after curfew. And she says that assault is just the tip of the iceberg of a pattern of sexual deviancy by Jackson County police officers... Burgess told C.B.'s friends to leave, then he handcuffed C.B., fondled her breasts, vaginal area and buttocks, forced her to give him oral sex and ejaculated. C.B and her counsel have pointed to a number of other instances both with this particular officer but also with his department, which indicates that for years, officers were getting a pass for essentially predatory and disturbing behavior. . . .

Arizona to charge families $25 per person to visit loved ones in prison

This is absolutely and irredeemably evil. Arizona Will Charge Families To Visit Their Incarcerated Loved Ones | ThinkProgress
A new Arizona law enables the Arizona prison system to charge people $25 a head before they can visit their friends or family members in prison. As David Fathi, director of the National Prison Project of the American Civil Liberties Union, explains, the fee will ultimately undermine the state’s ability to rehabilitate inmates: “We know that one of the best things you can do if you want people to go straight and lead a law-abiding life when they get out of prison is to continue family contact while they’re in prison. Talk about penny-wise and pound-foolish.”
