Oakland police busted for abusing people, but it's the Oakland taxpayer who ultimately pays

Apparently police aren't allowed to arrest people for no reason, leave them locked together all night without food or water or bathrooms and behave like monsters. Who knew? This is going to cost the already absolutely broke Oakland a million dollars, not including what it already paid in attorney's fees to defend this monstrous cops. Daily Kos: Mass Arrest Lawsuit Settled - OPD Costs Oakland's Taxpayers Yet Another Cool $1,000,000.
The National Lawyer's Guild today announced the settlment of a lawsuit from 2010 in which one hundred and fifty Oscar Grant verdict protesters were "mass arrested" for no reason other than revenge by Oakland Police and then mistreated by Alameda County Sheriffs' Deputies. The protest took place on November 5th, 2010, the day that Johnannes Meserle, the BART Police Officer who killed Oscar Grant was sentenced to less than two years in jail (with time in custody reducing the sentence) for the murder of Oscar Grant. U.S. District Court Judge Thelton Henderson has granted preliminary approval to a $1.025 million settlement in a class action lawsuit brought by the National Lawyers Guild on behalf of 150 people who were arrested by Oakland Police during a Nov. 5, 2010, demonstration... "We were handcuffed and left sitting on the street and then in buses for a total of about eight hours without access to a bathroom. People urinated in their pants as we sat in the hot crowded bus." "No food was provided for more than twelve hours after our initial detention. There was no room to lie down. I sat up against a wall for the entire night."

NYPD officer reprimanded for speaking one sentence in Spanish to a colleague

NYPD officer reprimanded for briefly speaking Spanish under little-known department rule - NY Daily News
An NYPD officer was issued a “memo of reprimand” after she was caught speaking Spanish while on duty — a violation of an English-only workplace rule for city cops, the Daily News has learned. Police Officer Jessenia Guzman, a Bronx native with a bloodline to the Dominican Republic, says she was written up on May 14 for uttering a single sentence in Spanish. Guzman, 40, was working the switchboard at the 24th Precinct stationhouse on the upper West Side when she ran afoul of the little-known rule. “It was just natural,” Guzman said, recalling the brief interaction with a colleague. “She walked by. She was going to get coffee. She said something. I responded (in Spanish). That was it.” It seemed so inconsequential that she said she doesn’t even remember what the brief exchange was about. Hours later, Guzman was called into a supervisor’s office and given the reprimand. It said she was “required to communicate department business in the language of English,” according to a copy obtained by The News. “This policy is in place to allow proper supervision of personnel,” the memo signed by Lt. Richard Khalaf read. The NYPD — which routinely touts the diversity of its force — defended the policy on Sunday. “We’re a 24/7 operation,” said Inspector Kim Royster, an NYPD spokeswoman. “We should be speaking one voice, which is English.”

Live Oak county sheriffs have been charged for running a "rape camp"

This is a county jail. Not a prison. It holds women awaiting trial, awaiting sentencing, or serving very minor jail terms. The woman who filed the charges and exposed this incredibly awful behavior was arrested for marijuana possession and while she was awaiting trial she was repeatedly raped and victimized by these servants of the people. charges against her were dismissed before trial. Tax dollars paid for this. Here's a quick quiz: what carries a harsher penalty? Marijuana possession or raping dozens of women for three years? Courthouse News Service
"Beginning sometime in 2007 to at least August of 2010 the Live Oak County Sheriff's office ran a 'rape camp' known as the Live Oak County Jail," the complaint states. "In this facility, numerous jailers, all employed by the Live Oak County Sheriff's Office, repeatedly raped and humiliated female inmates over an extended period of time. These forced acts of lasciviousness included, but are not limited to, forcing female inmates to repeatedly perform oral sex on male guards, forcing female inmates to repeatedly masturbate the male guards, the male guards masturbating in view of the female inmates, male guards forcing digital penetrative sex acts in the female inmates', forcing female inmates to engage in sexual sex acts with other female inmates, including but not limited to forcing female inmates to have oral sex with each other, among other things. "In addition to the repeated sexual assaults, numerous female inmates were sexually harassed. Certain male guards would strip the female inmates of their clothing and provide only shaving cream to conceal their genitalia. Certain male guards would sometimes force the female inmates to shower in front of them while instructing them to shave their vaginas. In other instances, while detailing their degenerate sexual fantasies, the jailers would pin the girls against a wall, grope their persons, verbally berate them, digitally rape their vagina and/or anus, then force them to perform oral sex. "In order to facilitate their carnal impulses, these guards would withhold food and water, engage in physical abuse, restrict privileges and verbally and emotionally abuse the women - even threaten to kill them in order to compel their compliance."
