Scientists create solar panels that are also windows

Your move, big oil. Pythagoras Solar Turns Windows Into Panels Of Energy | TPM Idea Lab
A start-up in Northern California is working on creating "solar windows" that could act as solar panels at the same time as blocking sunlight from entering office buildings to reduce their energy needs, according to a Sunday story in the San Francisco Chronicle. The company Pythagoras Solar is based in San Mateo, California, and it won an award from the "GE ecomagination Challenge," award of $100,000 last week for its idea. The company makes a "window laced with solar cells," that could generate power for office buildings and shield offices from sunlight, thus reducing air conditioning costs. The GE award is a "validation of three things -- that (the window) is unique, that it's feasible and it could have a big impact," Gonen Fink, Pythagoras' CEO told the Chronicle.

Cooking For Engineers

I love this. It's a cooking site with recipes and gadget reviews and a host of other features with the caveat that everything is explained very, very clearly. With like a million zillion steps for every recipe. Even making biscuits has roughly 75 steps to it here. It's cooking with no judgment calls at all. No guesswork. It's not for me, but it's wonderful. Biscuits (Southern Buttermilk Biscuits) - Recipe File - Cooking For Engineers

Apple to enable free texting between Apple devices

If I was AT&T I'd be furious now. And I'd also be building more fucking cell towers and improving coverage in San Francisco. Apple Has Finally Stuck A Dagger Into SMS. I Love It.
As one of the core new features highlighted today in iOS 5, iMessages has one purpose: to kill SMS. That is, traditional carrier-controlled text messages. iMessages will do this by replacing SMS with a service that Apple is in control of across all of their iOS devices. And here’s the real death blow: iMessages will be completely free. Sure, you can argue that iMessages is limited due to the iOS requirement. But as Apple announced today, there are over 200 million iOS devices out there now. That’s a lot. Like Blackberry Messenger before it, Apple now has the strength to create their own device-to-device messaging application. And that’s exactly what they’ve done. And considering what a colossal rip-off SMS is, I can’t help but love this move. It’s exactly what I’ve been waiting for.

Voice activated cars don't understand women

It’s Not You, It’s It: Voice Recognition Doesn’t Recognize Women - Techland - TIME.com
Here's something that could either relieve a lot of tension, or increase paranoia about whether or not the world is ignoring you: If you're a woman, there's a strong possibility that your voice-activated car really isn't listening to you. Thankfully, the problem is all the car's. According to AOL Autos, carmakers "acknowledge that women have a tougher time using speech-recognition technology than men" because the systems have a hard time deciphering what was actually said. It's not only women who have this problem; male drivers with foreign or even thick regional accents also, apparently, can't be understood by the systems either
