Word Sandwich: An addictive word guessing game

WORD SANDWICH ! WORD Hi Lo

It's all about guessing which 5-letter word is correct, in the limited amount of time available. Each of your incorrect guesses are moved up if they are too low (alphabetically speaking) or down if they are too high.

Try it out. Try and stop after only two. You can't.

Origami spaceplane to launch from space station

Origami spaceplane to launch from space station ::: Pink Tentacle

Researchers from the University of Tokyo have teamed up with members of the Japan Origami Airplane Association to develop a paper aircraft capable of surviving the flight from the International Space Station to the Earth’s surface.

The researchers are scheduled to begin testing the strength and heat resistance of an 8 centimeter (3.1 in) long prototype on January 17 in an ultra-high-speed wind tunnel at the University of Tokyo’s Okashiwa campus (Chiba prefecture). In the tests, the origami glider — which is shaped like the Space Shuttle and has been treated to withstand intense heat — will be subjected to wind speeds of Mach 7, or about 8,600 kilometers (5,300 miles) per hour.

A large spacecraft such as the Space Shuttle can reach speeds of up to Mach 20 (over 15,200 mph) when it re-enters the Earth’s atmosphere, and friction with the air heats the outer surface to extreme temperatures. The much lighter origami aircraft, which the researchers claim will come down more slowly, is not expected to burn up on re-entry.

The Disintegrator: a rubber-band minigun

Meet the Disintegrator: 24 barrels of rubber band minigun madness - Engadget

You've gotta admire folks who bring their trade to a whole new level, even if that does mean escalating the international arms race between builders of automated, wooden, rubber band miniguns. The 24-barrel, tripod-mountable monster you see above, lovingly known as the Disintegrator, was rather amazingly hand-carved and assembled by Anthony Smith of the UK, who spent four months on the ambitious build. Unlike your dinky little six-shooter, this model boasts a 288-band capacity and 40-round-per-second firing capability, making it one of the most dangerous weapons to remain unbanned by the TSA.

Spore coming to Macs in 2008

Ea: Spore Coming To Macs In 2008

This is exciting news.

Mac gaming will become less of a punchline and more of a reality this year, as EA plans to ship the Will Wright-helmed Spore for both Windows and Mac OS X in 2008. That's dependent, of course, on Spore shipping for any platform this year, something that we don't exactly have the highest confidence in. The EA published Spore will come to the Mac platform courtesy of TransGaming Technologies, whose graphics wrapper is reported to make the transition from PC to Mac wicked easy.

Play Rock Band with a real guitar

Ces: Rock Real Guitar on Rock Band

Rock Band gets slightly realer. Ediface from peripheral maker SoundTech is a guitar attachment that lets players jam out to Rock Band/Guitar Hero with an actual guitar. Here's how it works: The Windows XP and Mac compatible peripheral measures the notes being played on the guitar. After Ediface detects the real notes, it turns the sound into MIDI. With the above device, it then switches in any other alternative instrumentation much like a synthesizer. For RB/GH support, program in corresponding colors for notes — the first five frets of the top string, for example. The company is even making adaptors available for all major platforms.
