Authors flip out over totally legal ebook lending website, drive it offline

Even after authors realized it was legal, many are still trying to find ways to shut it down. Apparently believing that lending is illegal. Piracy witch hunt downs legit e-book lending Web site | Internet & Media - CNET News
On August 1, a vitriolic, hysterical mob of authors mistook e-book lending website Lendink for a piracy clearinghouse, rallying a terribly mistaken call to action. The site remains offline today as details emerge revealing just how wrong they all were - and how unrepentant some of them still are. Lendink was a hobby site for disabled Army vet Dale Porter, who used book e-tailer's APIs to list book stock at for-sale sites, and paired it with a person-to-person email request system where book owners could contact each other to swap book loans on books they wanted to read. Borrowing e-books is perfectly legitimate as spelled out in Lending Kindle Books; book e-tailers have a series of permissions in place where publishers can allow a 14-day "lend" of a purchased book between customers. But to a few virulently righteous individuals, this was not a new model for library science, but a hotbed of peer-to-peer piracy that had to be stopped at any cost. The whole ugly scene is reminiscent of when an angry mob in Britain vandalized a pediatrician's office when they thought the word on the doctor's office sign meant "pedophile."

Louisiana has basically ended public education, so what are kids learning in these charter schools?

It's an anti-science agenda, sure. But I did not expect it to be pro-KKK. 14 Wacky "Facts" Kids Will Learn in Louisiana's Voucher Schools | Mother Jones
2. Dragons were totally real: "[Is] it possible that a fire-breathing animal really existed? Today some scientists are saying yes. They have found large chambers in certain dinosaur skulls…The large skull chambers could have contained special chemical-producing glands. When the animal forced the chemicals out of its mouth or nose, these substances may have combined and produced fire and smoke."—Life Science, 3rd ed., Bob Jones University Press, 2007 3. It is still in need of the gospel…Only about ten percent of Africans can read and write. In some areas the mission schools have been shut down by Communists who have taken over the government."—Old World History and Geography in Christian Perspective, 3rd ed., A Beka Book, 2004 . . . 6. The KKK was A-OK: "[The Ku Klux] Klan in some areas of the country tried to be a means of reform, fighting the decline in morality and using the symbol of the cross. Klan targets were bootleggers, wife-beaters, and immoral movies. In some communities it achieved a certain respectability as it worked with politicians."—United States History for Christian Schools, 3rd ed., Bob Jones University Press, 2001

Louisiana school forces girls to take pregnancy tests, expels girls who test positive

Clearly charter schools are the way of the future. Or possibly the way of the 1950s with their segregation, bizarre attempts to ban minorities and special needs students, and their medieval treatment of women. Louisiana School Forces Students to Take Pregnancy Tests, Kicks Out Girls Who Refuse Or Test Positive | ThinkProgress
One Louisiana school is dealing with the state’s high rates of teen pregnancy by taking an “out of sight, out of mind” approach. No pregnant students are welcome at Delhi Charter School in Delhi, Louisiana — a policy that the institution enforces by requiring students who are “suspected” of being pregnant to submit to a mandatory pregnancy test. If students are pregnant, they are no longer allowed to attend classes on the school’s campus and will be forced to either switch to another school or begin a home school program. If a student refuses to take the test, she is “treated as a pregnant student” and also kicked out of Delhi Charter School, according to the student handbook: If an administrator or teacher suspects a student is pregnant, a parent conference will be held. The school reserves the right to require any female student to take a pregnancy test to confirm whether or not the suspected student is in fact pregnant. The school further reserves the right to refer the suspected student to a physician of its choice. If the test indicates that the student is pregnant, the student will not be permitted to attend classes on the campus of Delhi Charter School. If a student is determined to be pregnant and wishes to continue to attend Delhi Charter School, the student will be required to pursue a course of home study that will be provided by the school…Any student who is suspected of being pregnant and who refuses to submit to a pregnancy test shall be treated as a pregnant student and will be offered home study opportunities. If home study opportunities are not acceptable, the student will be counseled to seek other educational opportunities.
