Eighth Grade girl petitions Hasbro to stop making Easy Bake Ovens so goddamn girly

Eighth Grader To Hasbro: Your Purple Easy-Bake Oven Is Too Girly For My Little Brother – The Consumerist
In her petition on Change.org (via the Daily Beast) the girl writes that her little brother loves cooking, and even tried to “cook” tortillas once by putting them on top of a light bulb. That’s when he asked Santa for an Easy-Bake Ultimate Oven. She and her parents thought that was a lovely idea, at first. However, we soon found it quite appalling that boys are not featured in packaging or promotional materials for Easy Bake Ovens — this toy my brother’s always dreamed about. And the oven comes in gender-specific hues: purple and pink. I feel that this sends a clear message: women cook, men work. I have always been adamantly against anything that promotes specific roles in society for men and women, and having grown up with toys produced by the Hasbro corporation, it truly saddens me that such a successful business would resort to conforming to society’s views on what boys do and what girls do. Her goal is to let her brother know it’s not wrong in any way for him to want to grow up to be a chef, and she writes that the way to do that is with an Easy-Bake Oven featuring gender neutral toys and boys on its packaging. Her petition currently has almost 25,000 signatures.

On the rise and fall of "epic beard man"

A long read for y'all today. I am pretty firmly in the "he's a racist thug" camp. He seems crazy and violent and like he likes to start fights with people. The rise and fall of an Internet sensation - Page 1 - News - San Francisco - SF Weekly
That day, Bruso pulled on his custom-made "I am a motherfucker" T-shirt, snapped on his fanny pack, and met the pot-smoking buddy he calls Ugly Bob at the bus stop at Fruitvale and MacArthur in Oakland. They boarded a San Francisco–bound AC Transit bus, planning to buy some weed in the city. The two sixtysomethings sat near the front of the bus, where Bruso announced his plans to get his Stacy Adams shoes shined by a "brother" for his mom's funeral in Michigan. The driver would later tell police that Bruso had said that black people are good at shoe shining, but whatever the wording, it surely came out in Bruso's loud and gruff Chicago tones, and got people to pay attention. As Ugly Bob recalls it (though he says he wasn't wearing his hearing aid that day), an intoxicated black passenger named Michael Lovette said, "Why don't you get your own 'brother' to shine your shoes?" Bruso is not one to walk away from a challenge — just ask the North Beach cops who drove up to where he was yelling obscenities at cars on Columbus Avenue one day, and billy-clubbed and pepper-sprayed the 6-foot-1, 225-pound hulk until he cracked up and cried. Or check out the video on YouTube, Bruso's first taste of Internet infamy, of the police Tasing him after he thumbed his nose at them at an Oakland A's game last August. Lovette couldn't have known all that as Bruso walked to the back of the bus and sat opposite him. The tension was enough for a young black woman named Iyanna Washington sitting beside Bruso to start recording the exchange. "Let's get back to business. How much you charge me for a spit-shine?" Bruso asked. Lovette, who is 50 but looks 20 years younger, with braids and wraparound sunglasses, replied in a low voice, "Why a brother gotta spit-shine your shoes?"

Kung fu master and son beat up gang of 50 thugs trying to forcibly evict them

China has a little problem these days with property being stolen. Both by the state and by private hands. It got so bad that the universe made KUNG FU HUSTLE become a true story. Kung Fu Expert in China Beats Up Mob of 50 Trying to Evict Him - Washington's Blog
At first, the property company stuck up posters warning of dire consequences for any families who held out. Then, Mr Shen said, when 70 of the 100 households had left, the threats escalated. “This mob of thugs would block the street most days. They would pick on the women, threatening to kill their kids. Then people started tossing bricks through windows and letting off fireworks at night. Some people got beaten on the street.” On October 29, as Mr Shen went to work and his wife popped out for a packet of instant noodles, a mob of “30 to 50 men” materialised at their front door. “My wife tried to close the door, but they pushed it back and she tripped over. That is how the fight started,” said Mr Shen. With a flurry of kicks and punches, he and his 18-year-old son, a fellow kung fu devotee, set about the attackers, rendering seven of them near unconscious in the hallway. “It was self defence. I really cannot remember what kung fu skills I used. It was quite messy. Only seven people were injured because the rest were scared and stayed outside. Some of them ran away,” he said. When the police arrived, however, they were little help, insisting that since the thugs were unarmed, it was Mr Shen and his family who were in the wrong. They urged the family to sign the contract.
