Firefighters save ass from hole in the ground

Firefighters save donkey trapped in well - Yahoo! News

UNDERWOOD, Minn. - A donkey is happily eating grass again after falling down a dry, abandoned well and being freed in an intensive rescue effort. It appeared that the animal wandered away from its farm and onto some boards covering the well, which broke, said Bruce Huseth, fire chief in this western Minnesota town.

That's the kind of headline opportunity that comes along once, maybe twice in a lifetime. And Yahoo blew it.

San Francisco rolling out universal health care

San Francisco to Offer Care for Uninsured Adults - New York Times

The initiative, known as Healthy San Francisco, is the first effort by a locality to guarantee care to all of its uninsured, and it represents the latest attempt by state and local governments to patch a inadequate federal system.

It is financed mostly by the city, which is gambling that it can provide universal and sensibly managed care to the uninsured for about the amount being spent on their treatment now, often in emergency rooms.

After a two-month trial at two clinics in Chinatown, the program is scheduled to expand citywide to 20 more locations on Sept. 17.

Wil Wheaton on the ongoing communications revolution

SuicideGirls > News > Geek > Wil Wheaton's Geek in Review: Brave New World

Good column this.

Communication empowers people, and an empowered people are very, very scary to the powerful upper class who hope that we’ll just go away, right after we buy a lot of crap from them that we don’t need. And holy shit are they scared right now. The revolution may not be televised, but it’s being blogged, YouTubed, MySpaced, Facebooked, Dugg and Netscaped. Instead of embracing this new technology and the generation that’s growing up with it and taking it for granted, the big media conglomerates and their *AA organizations are spending time, money and energy they could be spending on creating awesome content on trying to destroy the technology that scares them. Is it any wonder the big media cabal want to destroy network neutrality? Is it any surprise that they’re clinging to stupid DRM schemes that punish honest customers and infect computers with rootkits?

The audience isn’t going to stop consuming content online, and creators aren’t going to go back to the old way of groveling at the feet of some network boss or studio head or label president, because they don’t have to anymore. Instead, they’ll just use inexpensive technology to put it all together, and use the Internet to distribute it directly to the audience. The studios have a choice now: continue their full-on war against consumers and technology, or join and benefit from the revolution.

More and more schools banning cupcakes

Cupcakes Disappear From Classrooms - Education News Story - WFSB Hartford

Many schools already ban peanut butter, because of food allergies. I wonder how far can this go? Schools segregated based on allergies? Schools allowing no outside food at all--everything provided by the system?

Where did all these food allergies come from anyway? Is it all from environmental pollution?

WATERFORD, Conn. -- The days of sending children to school with cupcakes for celebrations are history in many school districts.

For several health reasons, school districts have been banning the distribution of sweet treats in the classroom.

The Waterford school district has banned sweets from class because many students could be allergic to basic ingredients such as eggs or milk.

Many Waterford parents told Eyewitness News that they approve of the district's new ban of distributing baked goods.

Walmart security tries to take woman's baby

Unlawful Detention: Walmart Tries To Steal Shopper's Baby - Consumerist

They heard someone had lost a baby, and tried to take hers.

"They are trying to tell me that Ava is not my child. She started fussing so I began taking her out of the seat. The whole time this security guard is asking me to "give him the baby". FUCK YOU! There was no way I was handing her over! I tried to walk away, leaving her car seat, the diaper bag, even my wallet...they blocked me! I am screaming for them to get the fuck away from me. I start crying, sobbing, just holding Ava near me. Everytime the security guard put his hands near her I shifted away. Ava is screaming at the top of her lungs by this time. I am screaming to get a manager. I started telling them everything I could think of to prove she is mine. Her birthmark, hospital card in the diaper bag, my ID in my wallet...pictures of her in my wallet. I am screaming that I am going to sue the FUCK out of them and God help them when my husband and father hear about this!

Finally the manager realizes they have the wrong person..... he gives me everything for free... he puts the bags in my card and I basically run out of the store, still holding Ava. I couldnt get out of that parking lot fast enough."
