Lung cancer pariahs

Lung cancer patients fight stigma
Dr. Joan Schiller of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the National Lung Cancer Partnership said lung cancer carries a stigma that no other cancer does. "They feel ashamed of their cancer. They feel guilty about their cancer," said Schiller, who published a study last year in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology showing primary care doctors were less likely to send lung cancer patients to a cancer specialist than patients with other types of cancer. This means doctors, researchers and even patients are not pressing as hard for better therapies as they do for other cancers.... Two-thirds of all cancer cases can be traced to lifestyle, including obesity and poor diet. But no one blames breast cancer patients for their disease. "If I had had cervical cancer, nobody would have asked me 'how many sexual partners did you have?"' Atkenson added. Cervical cancer is caused by a wart virus that is transmitted sexually.

Israel refusing to let Palestinian students study abroad

U.S. Withdraws Fulbright Grants to Palestinians in Gaza - NYTimes.com

GAZA — The American State Department has withdrawn all Fulbright grants to Palestinian students in Gaza hoping to pursue advanced degrees at American institutions this fall because Israel has not granted them permission to leave.

. . .

Some Israeli lawmakers, who held a hearing on the issue of student movement out of Gaza on Wednesday, expressed anger that their government was failing to promote educational and civil development in a future Palestine given the hundreds of students who had been offered grants by the United States and other Western governments.

“This could be interpreted as collective punishment,” complained Rabbi Michael Melchior, chairman of the Parliament’s education committee, during the hearing. “This policy is not in keeping with international standards or with the moral standards of Jews, who have been subjected to the deprivation of higher education in the past. Even in war, there are rules.” Rabbi Melchior is from the Meimad Party, allied with Labor.

Marines in Iraq trying to convert people to Christianity

McClatchy Washington Bureau | 05/29/2008 | Iraqis claim Marines are pushing Christianity in Fallujah

FALLUJAH, Iraq — At the western entrance to the Iraqi city of Fallujah Tuesday, Muamar Anad handed his residence badge to the U.S. Marines guarding the city. They checked to be sure that he was a city resident, and when they were done, Anad said, a Marine slipped a coin out of his pocket and put it in his hand.

Out of fear, he accepted it, Anad said. When he was inside the city, the college student said, he looked at one side of the coin. "Where will you spend eternity?" it asked.

He flipped it over, and on the other side it read, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16."

"They are trying to convert us to Christianity," said Anad, a Sunni Muslim like most residents of this city in Anbar province. At home, he told his story, and his relatives echoed their disapproval: They'd been given the coins, too, he said.

No one could have seen this coming: Free gas giveaway ends in massive gridlock, anger

10th District candidate Dan Seals' campaign ploy offering cheap gas snarls traffic -- -- chicagotribune.com

A political campaign stunt meant to draw attention to the nation's high oil prices backfired Thursday when hundreds of motorists seeking cheap gas caused a massive traffic jam in north suburban Lincolnshire before most were turned away.

Only about 50 motorists who waited in a 1.5-mile line of cars for more than an hour actually made it to the pumps at a Marathon station on Milwaukee Avenue, where for one hour Democratic congressional candidate Dan Seals offered motorists the chance to buy as many as 10 gallons of gas for $1.85 per gallon.

With gas priced at $4.14 per gallon Thursday, Seals said he would make up the difference out of his campaign fund—an expenditure incumbent U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) contended could violate federal law. Green Party candidate David Kalbfleisch joined Kirk in criticizing the event.

'These Photos Are Mines'

mrright3-thumb.jpegvia | Gawker | Cash-Waving Craigslist Player's Fury: 'These Photos Are Mines'
Moral of this story: if you're digging yourself into a hole, stop digging. Yesterday, we got a tip about a self-described "Mr. Right" on NYC's Craigslist, who posted a personal ad with 30 pictures of himself, several of which feature him waving a stack of $20 bills. We put up a few of his photos and chuckled. But he was upset! So he called up the Gawker offices to voice his grievances. He charged us with fraud. He threatened to "punch the fucking guy whoever did this" and "fuck him up." And he warned us, "I'm ten times smarter than these people, cause I"m gonna record it right now." So are we! You have to hear it to believe it. Remember, kids: Craigslist is a public place. Click [through] to listen to the highlights.
