Aretha Franklin's hat, Detroit-made, wins global acclaim

Aretha Franklin's hat, Detroit-made, wins global acclaim | Freep.com | Detroit Free Press

Aretha Franklin's bow-tied, gift-wrapped, jewel-studded, $179 inaugural hat was designed, produced and sold to the Queen of Soul by Mr. Song Millinery, a family-owned business on Woodward Avenue just south of West Grand Boulevard.

Starting minutes after Franklin finished her distinctive rendition of "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" on Tuesday, the store's phones started ringing.

By Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Song had sold hundreds of hats. A store in Dallas had sold 500 more, and the material was running out.

"People are calling from England, asking for the hat," said Luke Song, who designed Franklin's chapeau. "I'm shocked. I had no idea. We did not expect this."

*Thanks, David!*

Suspended CSU cop gives all police a bad name

Abuse of Power - News

Just read this guy's quotes. He's like a satire of every brutal, crooked, sexist cop ever.

While the sudden suspension of CSU Police Chief Dexter Yarbrough last month came as another shocking challenge facing a transitioning administration, several campus officers say his absence comes as a breath of fresh air to the department -- putting what several independent sources called his "reign of terror" on hiatus.

Listing numerous accusations of improprieties ranging from falsifying police documents, to mandating the special treatment of student athletes, to teaching students illegal police tactics, several timid police officers say the President's Office had plenty of alarming evidence to take action long ago but turned a blind eye to a handful of alleged abuses of power.

. . .

He was handsomely rewarded with a $156,000-a-year salary, easily making him the highest paid law enforcement officer in the state.

. . . Yarbrough told the class "women want the dick, even when they say 'no.' They want the dick."

Anti-choice nurse being sued after removing woman's IUD and refusing to put it back in

Anti-choice nurse removes women's IUDs "accidently" - Feministing

The article suggests that she does this frequently.

A nurse in New Mexico is being sued after removing a woman's IUD without her permission and then refusing to put it back in. Why? Well this is what nurse Sylvia Olona told her patient:

"Having the IUD come out was a good thing [because] I personally do not like IUDs. I feel they are a type of abortion. I don't know how you feel about abortion, but I am against them. ...What the IUD does is take the fertilized egg and pushes it out of the uterus."

Bob May, "Lost in Space" robot-suit man, dead at 69

bob-may-150.jpgThe Associated Press: 'Lost in Space' actor Bob May dies at 69 in Calif.
Bob May, who donned The Robot's suit in the hit 1960s television show "Lost in Space," has died. He was 69. May died Sunday of congestive heart failure at a hospital in Lancaster, said his daughter, Deborah May. He was a veteran actor and stuntman who had appeared in movies, TV shows and on the vaudeville stage when he was tapped by "Lost in Space" creator Irwin Allen to play the Robinson family's loyal metal sidekick in the series that debuted in 1965. "He always said he got the job because he fit in the robot suit," said June Lockhart, who played family matriarch Maureen Robinson.... Because it wasn't easy to get in and out of the suit, he kept it on during breaks. "He was a smoker," Lockhart remembered. "From time to time (when he was on a break), we'd see smoke coming out of the robot. That always amused us."

$800K of our tax money pays for this abstinence clown to lie to our kids

Think Progress -- Your federal tax dollars are going to abstinence-only clowns.

Thanks to George W. Bush and a complicit Congress, we currently spend $1.5 billion a year to fund abstinence-only until marriage sex education in our public schools. And yes, that money goes to people like Derek Dye, as he is employed by the Elizabeth New Life Center that received a $800,000 CBAE grant in 2007 to promote abstinence until marriage. His qualifications? A “Bachelor of Fun Arts” from Barnum Bailey Clown College, and an abstinence educator certification that can be purchased for $50.
