Hash Bash in the age of medical pot

Event coincides with new law - MLive.com
Those attending the 38th annual Ann Arbor Hash Bash Saturday will likely be in a celebratory mood, organizers say, because the event lands on the day Michigan's medical marijuana law goes into effect. "The Hash Bash started as a smoke-in, and really is a smoke-in,'' said Adam Brook of Detroit, who will serve as emcee for the 19th time. "However, speakers take on current political question of the day. This year, it's medical marijuana.'' The law was passed by voters with 63 percent of the vote last November, and Michigan Department of Community Health offices will be open to accept applications of Monday. Medical marijuana patients will be able to go through a registration process and obtain a state ID card.

Detroit’s Daily Papers Are Now Not So Daily

Detroit Journal - Detroit’s Daily Papers Are Now Not So Daily - NYTimes.com

DETROIT — Maybe once a year, a city has a news day as heavy as the one that just hit Detroit: The White House forced out the chairman of General Motors, word leaked that the administration wanted Chrysler to hitch its fortunes to Fiat, and Michigan State University’s men’s basketball team reached the Final Four, which will be held in Detroit.

All of this news would have landed on hundreds of thousands of Motor City doorsteps and driveways on Monday morning, in the form of The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News.

Would have, that is, except that Monday — of all days — was the long-planned first day of the newspapers’ new strategy for surviving the economic crisis by ending home delivery on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Instead, on those days, they are directing readers to their Web sites and offering a truncated print version at stores, newsstands and street boxes.

10 terms not to use with Muslims

10 terms not to use with Muslims | csmonitor.com
As President Obama considers his first speech in a Muslim majority country (he visits Turkey April 6-7), and as the US national security establishment reviews its foreign policy and public diplomacy, I want to share the advice given to me from dear Muslim friends worldwide regarding words and concepts that are not useful in building relationships with them. Obviously, we are not going to throw out all of these terms, nor should we. But we do need to be very careful about how we use them, and in what context. 1. "The Clash of Civilizations." Invariably, this kind of discussion ends up with us as the good guy and them as the bad guy. There is no clash of civilizations, only a clash between those who are for civilization, and those who are against it. Civilization has many characteristics but two are foundational: 1) It has no place for those who encourage, invite, and/or commit the murder of innocent civilians; and 2) It is defined by institutions that protect and promote both the minority and the transparent rule of law.
A very thoughtful piece. Also included: 3. "Assimilation." 6. "Moderate." 8. "Freedom." 10. "Tolerance."

Victims of corrupt judge given amnesty

Clean slate for corrupt judge's young victims in Pennsylvania | World news | The Guardian

This is the judge who was being bribed by the operators of a private juvenile detention facility to funnel kids their way.

Hundreds of teenagers who were subjected to months in custody by a corrupt judge have had their convictions quashed by Pennsylvania's highest court in a judicial scandal dubbed "kids for cash".

The state's supreme court ruled that the judge, Mark Ciavarella, had violated the constitutional rights of the teenagers who came before his court, by failing to ensure they were properly legally represented.

International torch relays banned

BBC SPORT | Olympics | International torch relays banned
International torch relays ahead of the Olympics have been scrapped by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It follows the controversy that surrounded the Beijing Olympic relay which was dogged by protests as the torch made its way around the world. The 2008 relay's London leg was hit by several incidents and criticism over China's 'torch police' security staff. Organisers of the 2012 London Olympics have already said they had no plans to take the torch outside Britain.
