Milwaukee man tried to hire his roomate to attack a woman, so he could then rescue her

Man accused of plotting mayhem to win woman's love - JSOnline I bet Ben Stiller is optioning this right now to star in as a wacky romantic comedy.
Dominguez hatched what authorities say was a criminal plot that he hoped would bring him and Rodriguez together. The plan? Hire his roommate to kidnap Rodriguez, slash her face repeatedly with a utility knife and torch her Toyota. That way, Dominguez reasoned, he could "be there for her," helping his disfigured angel recover from her wounds by giving her tender care and a brand new car. The roommate, however, took his story to police and the police took Dominguez to jail, charging him with three felonies that could put him in prison for decades. Rodriguez spoke Friday about feeling betrayed - even though she expressed no romantic feelings for Dominguez and said she sometimes worried about accepting so much money from him. "He said he just wanted for me to be happy," Rodriguez said, insisting that initially she didn't want him to wire her $1,500 to $2,500 each week.

Forget breathalyzers, police now want your blood

Police say syringes will help stop drunk driving - Yahoo! News
BOISE, Idaho – When police officer Darryll Dowell is on patrol in the southwestern Idaho city of Nampa, he'll pull up at a stoplight and usually start casing the vehicle. Nowadays, his eyes will also focus on the driver's arms, as he tries to search for a plump, bouncy vein. "I was looking at people's arms and hands, thinking, 'I could draw from that,'" Dowell said. It's all part of training he and a select cadre of officers in Idaho and Texas have received in recent months to draw blood from those suspected of drunken or drugged driving. The federal program's aim is to determine if blood draws by cops can be an effective tool against drunk drivers and aid in their prosecution. If the results seem promising after a year or two, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will encourage police nationwide to undergo similar training. For years, defense attorneys in Idaho advised clients to always refuse breath tests, Ada County Deputy Prosecutor Christine Starr said. When the state toughened the penalties for refusing the tests a few years ago, the problem lessened, but it's still the main reason that drunk driving cases go to trial in the Boise region, Starr said.

Kos: Perpetual copyright? Not a great idea.

Daily Kos: State of the Nation
The wankers (now led by novelist Mark Helprin) are now arguing for unlimited and perpetual copyright? Really?... From Haleperin's text:
"It would be one thing if such a revolution produced Mozarts, Einsteins, or Raphaels, but it doesn't. It produces mouth-breathing morons in backwards baseball caps and pants that fall down [...]
Interesting that Helprin would cite Mozart, who hailed from a world in which composers borrowed heavily from each other, not to mention built upon existing works: Every single one of his operas were based on someone else's stories. He certainly didn't write the stories of Don Giovanni or the Marriage of Figaro. And even the music was sometimes borrowed from elsewhere. People think Mozart was the composer of "Twinkle twinkle little star", but he actually wrote 12 variations for piano of the French tune "Ah vous dirai-je, Maman". In other words, one of Mozart's most famous tunes is not really his, but "borrowed" or "inspired" by an existing folk melody.

Study: Married religious leaders are basically always hitting on people

Many Women Targeted by Faith Leaders, Survey Says - washingtonpost.com
One in every 33 women who attend worship services regularly has been the target of sexual advances by a religious leader, a survey released Wednesday says. The study, by Baylor University researchers, found that the problem is so pervasive that it almost certainly involves a wide range of denominations, religious traditions and leaders. . . . It found that more than two-thirds of the offenders were married to someone else at the time of the advance. Carolyn Waterstradt, 42, a graduate student who lives in the Midwest, said she was coerced into a sexual relationship with a married minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for 18 months. He had been her pastor for a decade, she said, and told her the relationship was ordained by God.

Forest Service warns Coloradans: Beware of camping Latinos

Colorado Independent -- Forest Service warns Coloradans: Beware of camping Latinos
In a presentation on recent discoveries of major marijuana-cultivation operations in Colorado, the U.S. Forest Service said it suspected an international cartel was behind the state’s hidden weed farms. Officials issued a warning that asked forest visitors to look for signs of drug trafficking. The telltale signs according to the officials? Tortilla, Spam and tuna packaging, Tecate beer cans, Latino music and people speaking Spanish. Officials failed to acknowledge (1) that they were describing roughly a quarter of all campsites in the state and (2) that Spam, tortillas, tuna, Tecate, Latino music and people speaking Spanish are some of the best ingredients you can find when you’re looking to mix up a damn good camping experience. Yet U.S. Forest Service officer Michael Skinner urged anyone encountering campers who fit the profile to “hike out quickly” and call police.
