Aged nearly 70 and a multimillionaire, John Cleese shouldn't have to go back on the road. But tonight he opens a one-man show in Oslo. It's called A Ludicrous Evening with John Cleese... or How to Finance Your Divorce. John Cleese and ALICE FAYE EICHELBERGER In fact, he makes no secret of the fact that it is his only reason for going back on tour. 'I get angry that I have to pack my trunk, just to go away to make money,' he said. 'That I, at my age, would have to plan my life anew to pay her all the money she is to get for the next seven years - well, it irritates me.

Marie Claire editor: Young women like smoking pot

Nicer buzz than alcohol and you can function the next day. Psychiatrist: Prohibition makes pot more harmful | Raw Story
Marie Claire editor-in-chief Joanna Coles disagreed with Holland's view that there is a large social stigma attached to smoking marijuana. "I have to say, that's not what we are hearing from readers," she said on the Today Show. "First of all, it's decriminalized in 13 states, and I don't think this is a generation of people who get excited about the fact that it's illegal." The inspiration for the article, Coles said, was "hearing from readers that they were feeling stressed. Clearly, the economy is a great deal of stress for people and they wanted a way to unwind. And they found more and more of them were doing this [smoking marijuana] and they found it had less impact on them when they were going to work the next morning. So they didn't want to drink. It's cheap and they felt they could do it in the privacy of their own home, and it was a very effective way to calm down." Holland agreed that marijuana may be a less harmful drug than alcohol, saying that marijuana has "psycho-therapeutic" properties that booze lacks. "It's more of a mind drug," she said. "Alcohol's sort of a deadening, numbing... maybe more like a body drug." On pot, "people are unwinding and they're relaxing, but they're also able to think and maybe analyze or think clearly ... I think cannabis is ... more functional than alcohol, certainly in terms of anxiety. It can be a treatment or a medicine."

Britain considering banning glass pint glasses in pubs

British Government Considers Mandating Plastic Pint Glasses - Lowering the Bar
Trying to control stabbings by banning knives that have a point on the end was bad enough. But this is really going too far. The BBC reported recently that the British Home Office is seeking a new design for pint glasses that it hopes may reduce the number of incidents in which people attack each other with pint glasses. According to official statistics, 5,500 people are attacked with glasses and bottles every year in England and Wales. (Probably lots more in Scotland, though maybe they just use swords.) This public safety emergency has spurred the government into action, seeking a design that cannot be used as a weapon.

Marin non-profit dumping $35 Million into underperforming schools

Marin foundation giving $35 million to schools That is a lot of money. This is an awesome thing for well-off people to do.
(09-28) 20:05 PDT -- A Marin County nonprofit will pour $35 million into a handful of school districts specifically to help students who lag behind their more privileged peers, an unprecedented infusion of cash focused on about 1,800 children. The money from the Marin Community Foundation will amount to about $19,000 per student over five years, or $3,800 apiece annually in extra services. The full grant is a jaw-dropping figure that will probably grow with additional donations from the 300 families that have contributed to the foundation's $1 billion assets, said Thomas Peters, the group's president and chief executive officer. The organization is making grants to schools in the San Rafael, Sausalito Marin City, Novato and Shoreline school districts, which are attended by the highest percentage of low-achieving students in Marin County. About 19 percent of the 9,970 students in those districts fall below or far below basic performance levels on the state's standardized tests.
