White House concerned about flu spreading in churches

Comment on "White House concerned about spreading flu in churches"
WASHINGTON (RNS) The White House and federal health officials have released guidelines recommending that worshippers take precautions against spreading germs to reduce the risk of contracting swine flu. Marilyn Meyers, a 67-year-old member of Washington National Cathedral, already had thought about the health risks involved in her church’s services. On Sunday (Oct. 4), as she has for the past several months, she rubbed sanitizer on her hands before getting in line for Holy Communion. “You shake hands, you touch the prayer books we all share, you break off a piece of the same bread—who knows what might be on it?” she said. At Sunday’s service, parishioners continued to exchange the Sign of Peace, shaking hands with those around them. Most also waited in line to receive Communion, often sipping from a communal chalice.
And OF COURSE people freak out about this. From the comments: This is yet another ploy by the liberals to keep people from receiving Our Lord with reverence; On the Tongue while kneeling. And, remember the SARS and the Bird flu? Whatever happened with those charades that were suppose to affect millions and millions of people? This H1N1 is another farce; listening to virologists they have said that the common flu will kill more people this year than the H1N1. Don’t buy it people, and keep receiving Our Lord on the tongue. And do they plan on stopping the administration of the Precious Blood too? Another Protestant invention just like Communion in the hand. These liberals have tried to refuse my family as well as otherS from receiving Our Lord while kneeling, when the Holy Fathers have always said we have that choice and RIGHT! So, you see, there is more to it than the excuse of this Pig flu story. STAND UP and FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT! OUR GOD COMES FIRST AND FOREMOST AND DESERVES ALL THE REVERENCE AND RESPECT WE UNWORTHY SINNERS CAN GIVE HIM. PEACE TO ALL!

Our Culture (high and popular) is usually created by people who are happy with the systems the world has given them. Magazine editors don't spend a lot of time wishing for better technology. Opera singers focus more on their singing than on microphone technologies. Novelists proudly use typewriters.... If you take a look at this chart, you can see the danger anyone who introduces new technology faces. While you'll attract Les Paul and the 37Signals guys, you're more likely to attract spammers, scammers, opportunity seekers and others that will bring our culture down as easily as they'll bring it up. The challenge is in designing structures and transparency that will attract the good guys while burying or repelling those that seek the new technology (because they can't find anywhere else to go). In other words, you either need to move the top left to the top right (not easy, but possible*), or educate the bottom left of the grid in how to contribute to the culture (really difficult indeed). ... *The much-anticipated folding of Gourmet magazine is proof of what happens when the top left refuses to move right. Most of the Conde Nast empire is facing the abyss of this problem right now.

American society is broken, killing the cities' children

In Violent Chicago, 'It's Tough to Be a Kid' - washingtonpost.com
But the challenges facing countless Chicago schoolchildren -- 84 percent of the system's more than 400,000 students come from impoverished homes, according to school officials -- stretch beyond what policing can solve. Weis calls it a failure of society, a view widely shared. "It's the parents. There's really not much the government can do. You can't legislate a good heart," said Jessie Smith, 73, a retired heating and air-conditioning technician who lives near Fenger. The Rev. Robin Hood said Chicago police "can't do more than what they've been doing." He worked for several years with CeaseFire, a group that focuses on street-level outreach, often using former gang members "who have credibility and notoriety and who don't mind standing there when the guns are coming up." Huberman, a former police officer and chief of staff to Mayor Richard M. Daley (D), recently designed a program to identify the schoolchildren most likely to be shot.
