Brent Jones, the boy who doesn't officially exist

'Kid who doesn't exist' looks to future | IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star
Because Brent has gone through life without answers, and without the birth certificate or Social Security number he needs, everything from a driver's license to a job has been denied him. School administrators told him he couldn't receive financial aid for college. He faced a post-graduation black hole. A few days after the administrator shared Brent's story, and after I said I'd like to meet him, Brent spotted me in the hallway on Manual's third floor. Smiling and friendly as always, he introduced himself. "I'm Brent Jones," he said. "I'm the kid who doesn't exist." Before I tell the rest of this story, I should mention that Brent is one of the most optimistic 18-year-olds you'll ever meet. Still, as we talked that first time, and during dozens of conversations since, he made clear he understood the severity of his dilemma.

Men show up to punk show dressed as Nazis, get beaten by fifty people

Concertgoers show the Reich stuff, are beaten by crowd | Philadelphia Daily News | 04/27/2010 This is how the first amendment works. You're allowed to be an asshole and dress like a Nazi, but then 50 people might beat the stupid out of you.
How did they Nazi this coming? Three men who showed up in full Nazi regalia to a hardcore punk show at an Old City bar Friday night were attacked by as many as 50 people on the streets after leaving the venue, according to witnesses and club management. The headlining band at the Khyber that night was Murphy's Law, led by front man Jimmy G, who formerly went by the moniker Jimmy Gestapo. In an e-mail to the Daily News, Jimmy G confirmed that some guys had showed up to the concert in "full Nazi field dress." "And they did get their asses kicked," he wrote. "Again." Khyber owner Stephen Simons, who was not at the show, said he had been told that the crowd inside "largely ignored and mocked" the three men. But after they exited the club, on 2nd Street near Chestnut, they were attacked by a group of up to 50 people, he said. "I guess being on 2nd Street in SS uniforms on a Friday night is a way to incite a semi-riot," Simons said.

Are teens creating new slang for Facebook, or is this article horseshit?

Facebook speak: Teenagers create secret online language - Telegraph Whenever I see a slang article I take it with a shaker of salt. Ever since the "grunge slang" fiasco (when the New York Times interviewed a woman at Sub Pop records about the grunge movement, and she lied her ass off about slang) I have not trusted any of these articles that claim to tell adults the secret words of teens. What do you think?
The teens are using it to stop parents and employers judging them by their social activities such as partying and drinking. Instead of writing they are drunk, teens post 'Getting MWI' - or mad with it. Being in a relationship is known as 'taken' or 'Ownageeee', and 'Ridneck', a corruption of redneck, means to feel embarassed. Meanwhile, girls posting 'Legal' are indicating that they are above 16 and legally allowed to have sex. Lisa Whittaker, a postgraduate student at the University of Stirling, who studied teens aged 16-18 on Bebo in Scotland, said the slang had been created to keep their activities private, and cited the example of one young girl who was sacked after bosses found pictures of her drinking on the website. . . .

NYC to donate truckloads of counterfeit designer goods to Haiti

Haiti quake victims to receive knock-off goods - CNN.com
(CNN) -- At times, counterfeiting can be a good thing. Just ask the district attorney in Brooklyn, New York. Seven truckloads of confiscated counterfeit designer duds and shoes -- Ed Hardy, Nike and Diesel among the imitation brands -- are headed to earthquake victims in Haiti. The 125,000 tons of clothing and shoes, valued at $10 million, were seized by New York police and would normally be destroyed, but in this case, the contraband will go to good use. "Permission was obtained from manufacturers, including Nike, Timberland, Antik Denim Jeans, Black Label and Christian Audigier, to allow the knockoffs to be donated to charity," Kings County District Attorney Charles J. Hynes told CNN affiliate WPIX.
