Why does Aaron Sorkin get everything wrong always?

Abhay nails down my deep discomfort with Sorkin. Three things about HBO which I’ve started watching...
The other thing HBO keeps showing is a trailer for the new Aaron Sorkin show, which … looks like it’s supposed to be about what the media’s supposed to be, and the hero is an older white male broadcaster who uses his newscast to put public figures in “media court.” Except… we have that already— it’s called Bill O’Reilly and it fucking SUCKS. That’s every douchebag on cable, what they think they are, and they’re all sociopathic leeches destroying human civilization, pretty much. So I’m missing something from these trailers… I’m going to watch a couple probably— I like Jeff Daniels certainly and I think Kim Pine’s in there. But has anyone noticed Sorkin always gets EVERYTHING wrong? His show about Sports was about how sports broadcasters love the lion king and hate hunting, you know— the usual issues raised by the modern sports-entertainment complex. His show about the West Wing was about how the institution draws the best and the brightest who believe in using an institution greater than themselves to benefit their country, none of whom have ever met a lobbyist apparently or been corrupted by money— that was broadcast simultaneously as the Bill Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. His show about comedy was about how great comedy (i.e. comedy which references Gilbert & Sullivan) is made by serious issues-driven people who think comedy is the end-all be-all of the human experience but have to struggle with their brothers being in Afghanistan. His movie the Social Network is about how the internet was built by anti-social nerds with problems with women. In real life, Mark Zuckerberg just married his long-term college girlfriend (whose existence Sorkin dismissed by some weird thing where he talked about how these guys seek out women who “don’t challenge them“…?); oh also, today, Facebook’s COO is a woman. I know art’s the lie that tells the truth and drama > facts, but … am I nuts or is that guy just completely unable to get shit for shit about the world right? He writes dialogue fun, I guess— everyone talks all fast at the beginning of the Social Network and that’s a great scene. So I mean, maybe the “I’m not sure he knows his head from his ass” criteria is a way people even care to judge his stuff. I enjoy the animated gifs that go around of Martin Sheen yelling pretty things at bigots, that sometimes come up on my dashboard. But it’s just… Does it matter to anybody that guy might as well be writing about Candyland all the time?
