Dan Harmon on story structure, Joseph Campbell, and the hero's journey in Die Hard

Dan Harmon, creator of Community, gets super fucking crunchy about story structure and the mythic cycle. This is wonderful stuff for any writers in the house. Story Structure 104: The Juicy Details - Channel 101 Wiki
Okay, here's that part where the self appointed guru tells you exactly what needs to happen and when. I hope I've made it clear to you before I do that that the REAL structure of any good story is simply circular - a descent into the unknown and eventual return - and that any specific descriptions of that process are specific to you and your story. Here is my detailed description of the steps on the circle. I'm going to get really specific, and I'm not going to bother saying, "there are some exceptions to this" over and over. There are some exceptions to everything, but that's called style, not structure. . You (a character is in a zone of comfort) . Need (but they want something) . Go (they enter an unfamiliar situation) . Search (adapt to it) . Find (find what they wanted) . Take (pay its price) . Return (and go back to where they started) . Change (now capable of change)

The oral history of The Wire

One of the greatest tv shows ever made gets the full oral history treatment. Maxim Interrogates the Makers and Stars of The Wire | Maxim
Ten years ago this month, The Wire premiered on HBO and… almost nobody cared. The Baltimore saga of cops and dealers, junkies and politicians, poverty and hope, polarized critics, was ignored by the Emmys, constantly struggled for ratings and faced cancellation more than once. But it also inspired a future President, created a bona fide American folk hero, and helped launch the current “Golden Age” of television. Now for the first time ever, the creators, writers, cast and crew recall the making of an American classic. In the mid-1980s David Simon, a police reporter for the Baltimore Sun, met Ed Burns, a homicide detective in the midst of a major case involving local drug kingpin and folk hero Melvin Williams. Key evidence in the case was gathered using wiretap surveillance.

Watch This: Burning Love, episode one

By Mike Rosenstein and Ken Marino of The State. A spoof of the Bachelor starring like a dozen great women comics. How many great things is Ken Marino in these days? So many things. Also, Malin Ackerman is in this and ever since I powered through every episode of Children's Hospital I have a wicked crush on her and will watch her in any comedy. Oh snap! Kristen Bell is here too.
