This is what "rape culture" looks like
Two guys rape an unconscious girl while dozens of people watch, pass by, or just do nothing. Their coach tries to cover it up. The town--largely--turns against the girl who was raped.
And here on the internet, an intrepid journalist captured the tweets and forum posts of people attacking the rape victim for being a victim. The comments are familiar: she was drunk, therefore it was okay to rape her; they thought she was a slut, so it was okay to rape her; the guys were totally going to join the NFL, so it was okay to rape her.
The rationale is disgusting, of course. It's profoundly sexist and dehumanizing. If you want to see more examples, click through.
Look: there is no circumstance where it is acceptable to rape someone. None. Not if they are drunk. Not if you are drunk. Not if you're in prison. Not if you're in the army. Not if you're married. Not if they are dressed provocatively. None.
And when someone make a pro-rape culture joke, we need to call them out on it. We're social animals, people. We convey social norms by our actions and words. If we don't tell each other not to litter, not to drive drunk, to respect women, to respect gay people, then it might not happen.
