1987 Chicago TV Pirating Incident: Max Headroom on Dr. Who

Avid Dr. Who fans, my parents, my brother and I watched this go down live on Channel 11, WTTW, Chicago. Disconcerting, to say the least. There was also a wave of break-ins on Chicago FM radio stations in the early 1980s. Most likely explanation: Unlicensed use of microwave transmitters overwhelming the stations' studio-transmitter links.

During a broadcast of the Dr. Who episode "Horror of Fang Rock" on WTTW Chicago Channel 11, on Sunday November 22nd, 1987, at around 11:15pm, a Video "Pirate" wearing a Max Headroom mask broke into the signal and transmitted one of the weirdest, unauthorized things ever to hit the Chicago airwaves.
