Can the female mind multiply problems simply by talking about them?

"Co-ruminating" can lead to depression in teen girls: study

Survey says: it can, but not alone.

A new study shows that excessively talking about problems with friends, or "co-ruminating," can lead to increased depression and anxiety in girls. That in turn causes more collective grumbling and creates a "vicious cycle" that feeds on itself.

The benefits of confiding in friends have long been known, but this paper, published in the July issue of the journal Developmental Psychology, reveals that having someone to kvetch with is a mixed blessing. While it strengthens friendships for both genders, only females experience the negative fallout.
