The Los Angeles Times reported on Saturday that dozens of voters have complained they were duped by a firm working for the GOP into switching their party registration to Republican while being told they were signing a petition for tougher penalties on child molesters.

A single group turned out to be behind the "slamming" -- Young Political Majors, which was previously found to be using similar tactics in Florida in 2004. In that election, YPM was employed by another firm called JSM Inc., which was working for conservative powerhouse Arno Political Associates. Similar stories involving all three have surfaced in Arizona, Massachusetts, and Ohio. MSNBC's Contessa Brewer asked legal analyst Susan Filan on Monday about the case. "This is really serious," Filan responded. "This is a very specific, deliberate intent to mislead." She contrasted it with the far more trivial accusations of voter fraud against the anti-poverty group ACORN, which has handed in occasional fake registrations under names such as "Mickey Mouse." Late on Saturday, the owner of Young Political Majors, Mark Jacoby, was arrested on charges of having fraudulently registered himself to vote at a California address where he lived as a child so that he would meet California's legal requirement that signature gatherers be eligible to vote in that state.

Unbelieveable: Chicago Tribune, L.A. Times endorse Obama

Neither paper has ever endorsed a democrat for president. LAT | Barack Obama for president | He is the competent, confident leader who represents the aspirations of the United States.

We need a leader who demonstrates thoughtful calm and grace under pressure, one not prone to volatile gesture or capricious pronouncement. We need a leader well-grounded in the intellectual and legal foundations of American freedom. Mr. Wurzelbacher’s notoriety has raised the ire of Tom Joseph, business manager for Local 50 of the United Association of Plumbers, Steamfitters, and Service Mechanics, who claimed that Mr. Wurzelbacher didn’t undergo any apprenticeship training. "When you have guys going out there with no training whatsoever, it’s a little disreputable to start with," Mr. Joseph said. "We’re the real Joe the Plumber." Mr. Joseph said Mr. Wurzelbacher could only legally work in the townships, but not in any municipality in Lucas County or elsewhere in the country. "This individual has got no schooling, no licenses, he’s never been to a training program, union or non-union, in the United States of America," Mr. Joseph said.... In January, 2007, the Ohio Department of Taxation placed a lien against him because $1,183 in personal property taxes had not been paid, but there has been no action in the case since it was filed.

Depression-era law permits Mich. governor to halt forclosures, but

While the group Moratorium Now! staged a protest outside City Hall on Friday, some of its members were inside delivering a letter to Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr., asking him to petition Gov. Jennifer Granholm to declare a state of emergency in Detroit and use her executive power to impose a moratorium on mortgage foreclosures. Depression-era legislation gives the governor authority to take such action, say advocates.... Attorney Jerry Goldberg, part of the Moratorium Now! coalition, says that Granholm has so far rejected calls to use her executive authority to institute a moratorium. Granholm's office says legislative action is needed before she can act. Goldberg disputes that claim.

Earlier this year, state Sen. Hansen Clarke (D-Detroit) introduced SB 1306, which would impose a two-year moratorium on evictions across the state. That doesn't mean homeowners would be allowed to stay in their homes and pay nothing, Clarke has said. Judges would determine payment amounts, allowing time to recover for those who have been laid off or who are suffering financial setbacks because of illness.... After reviewing SB 1306, Canova told Metro Times that, in his opinion, the proposed law is certainly constitutional. "The United States Supreme Court upheld a similar foreclosure moratorium act that was passed in 1933 by Minnesota during the Depression in the case of Home Building and Loan Association v. Blaisdell," he says. Moreover, government action that helps protect those "at the bottom of the economic pyramid" is vital. As he noted in an opinion piece posted on the website hosted by the left-leaning Institute for Public Accuracy: "I am unconvinced that this $700 billion bailout for Wall Street will have any lasting positive effect. ... The Bush administration is once again using fear to scare people into supporting a dangerous course. There are almost 10,000 foreclosures a week now, and between 1 million and 2 million adjustable rate mortgages are due to adjust upward in the next year. Without help for the bottom of the pyramid, Wall Street will be back next year asking for another trillion dollars."
