Making Fiends
Making Fiends is Amy Winfrey's hilarious and grim web-toon, which has just been picked up by Nickelodeon for TV. The premise is simple: Charlotte is a polyanna schoolgirl, while Vendetta is her savage mad scientist classmate who terrorizes the school by "making fiends" -- producing huge, terrible monsters. Charlotte makes friends, Vendetta makes fiends. It's great emo-toonery, a la Lenore, with a fantastic, dark visual style.

Gayla Peevey [ed: the singer, who was 10 when she recorded the song] herself writes in to add: "The record was released nationally by Columbia Records and because the Oklahoma City Zoo needed a hippo at the time, the song gave them the idea of putting together a major media blitz asking kids to send in nickels and dimes to raise money to buy Gayla a hippopotamus for Christmas. Matilda, a baby hippo, was presented to me, and I donated her to the zoo. In a roundabout way the song indeed helped the zoo acquire a hippo, but the song was not recorded for that purpose."

Finally, the deer overtook Kevin and got a little overly friendly.
"It caught up to me, and then it jumped on my back and started licking my ear, so I pushed it off and it started licking my ear again," Kevin said. "So I just kept on running, and there were coaches with sweat shirts and they yelled at me to come towards them. So I ran towards them, and they shooed the deer off with their sweat shirts."
Kevin and his coaches have a theory on why the deer chased him.
"The coaches said that it wanted the salt from the sweat on my back, and, um, I think it was using me as a human salt lick," said Kevin, who learned a valuable lesson from the bizarre encounter.
