GO AHEAD, HATE THE MUSLIMS!

muslimhate44.jpgPoet Warrior | GO AHEAD, HATE THE MUSLIMS! A DEFENSE OF BLOG FREE SPEECH | Unlike Others, U.S. Defends Freedom to Offend in Speech | By ADAM LIPTAK

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — A couple of years ago, a Canadian magazine published an article arguing that the rise of Islam threatened Western values. The article’s tone was mocking and biting, but it said nothing that conservative magazines and blogs in the United States do not say every day without fear of legal reprisal.

Things are different here. The magazine is on trial.

Two members of the Canadian Islamic Congress say the magazine, Maclean’s, Canada’s leading newsweekly, violated a provincial hate speech law by stirring up hatred against Muslims. They say the magazine should be forbidden from saying similar things, forced to publish a rebuttal and made to compensate Muslims for injuring their “dignity, feelings and self-respect.”

The British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal, which held five days of hearings on those questions here last week, will soon rule on whether Maclean’s violated the law.

Hate New Orleans? Read this!

bush_vacation_fishing.jpgDaily Kos | Hate New Orleans? Read this!

Frankly, I'm tired of people dismissing New Orleans. Why do so many Americans--people who would rush to the aid of virtually any other area of their country in need of help--look down on New Orleanians as if they had it coming with Katrina? Why does George W. Bush all but ignore the ongoing efforts to rebuild the Big Easy? And why would Chicago Bears fans address such insensitive signs to Saints fans as, "Bears finishing what Katrina started?"

What makes New Orleans so different that fellow Americans have no qualms about ignoring pleas and/or mocking the plight of the ravaged city?

In his State of the Union Address on Jan. 23, George W. Bush made not one comment on the still-ongoing effort to rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. I noted this on my blog yesterday, receiving the following comment in response:

I know!

Lets use taxpayer dollars to rebuild a shithole that was built below sea level between a lake and a BIG FUCKING OCEAN, which all honest observation should be a FUCKING SWAMP except for the HUGE PUMPS that keep it dry.

That way, next time there is a hurricane, it can be destroyed again. This way, sit-t in New Orleans will always be new.

Wait, I have a better idea. MOVE THE FUCK OUT ASSHOLE!!!!

Hate in a story about embracing diversity

clowes.thumb.jpgGet Religion | Hate in a story about embracing diversity

The story is about Danny Leydorf, who attended a Christian school in Annapolis since he was in kindergarten. For college he selected the University of Maryland, a secular state school, in an effort to “test his faith in a more diverse world.”... After reading the through the first five paragraphs of the article, one does not have to wonder why Christians are hesitating or nervous:
“I hate evangelical Christians,” read the Facebook.com profile of his roommate-to-be, who had seemed so perfect on the phone. He loved politics and “The Simpsons,” like Leydorf, and they even had the same views about how to set up the room. Could it still work?
We later learn that Leydorf decided to ignore the Facebook comment, concluding that the unnamed roommate was using “evangelical” to describe people like “Jerry Falwell whom Leydorf considers intolerant.” (I guess it just depends on how you define “evangelical,” right?)

'Why does everyone hate me?'

shilpashetty460.jpgGuardian Unlimited | Germaine Greer | Thousands have complained about the racist bullying of Shilpa Shetty on Big Brother. But we should not be surprised - it simply reflects the widespread bigotry of British society

There are no good reasons for watching Celebrity Big Brother and very good reasons for not. Not watching will spare you the nerve-fraying annoyingness that is Shilpa Shetty. Everything about her is infuriating....What no one seems to have quite understood is that Shilpa is a very good actress. Everyone hates her because she wants them to. She also knows that if she infuriates people enough, their innate racism will spew forth.

As a Tamil, Shetty has certainly had to deal with discrimination at home in suburban Mumbai. Her only motive for parading in front of the other women in the house with whitener on her face was to show what utter hicks they are, how little they understand of her complex reality or of a billion people in the subcontinent who all want to have wheat-coloured skin. I bet thousands of brown-skinned girls in Southall fell off the sofa laughing when she did that.

Don't Hate The Smoker

lungs_clip_image009.jpgGuardian | Comment is free | Don't hate the smoker | If smokers are marginalised in our society there is a danger that they will begin to see their habit as a badge of honour. | Deborah Arnott

In the BMJ today it's argued that smokers should be denied operations unless they quit. And recently there have been cases of people being refused jobs or are being sacked just for being smokers even though they promise not to smoke at work. This is not what Action on Smoking and Health is fighting for - we are anti-smoking, yes, but not anti-smoker and in today's climate we think that there is a very real danger that smokers are being marginalised in our society....

While it's important to accept the rights of smokers to carry on smoking, it also needs to be recognised that being a smoker is not a matter of free choice; they're gripped by an addiction fuelled by the tobacco industry and they need support to give up.

Don't Hate Me

p1363.jpgAdbusters the Magazine #69 | Don't Hate Me | Gregory Benchwick

I’m loath to admit that it’s all my fault – these problems of war and famine, genocide, dead babies, incendiary bombs and bunker busters. I’m the smoking gun, the catalyst for Bush’s “misunderestimations” in Iraq, terror threats, orange alerts, race hate and police violence.

I’d turn myself in if they’d take me, but, according to my lawyers, I have yet to break a law. Yet it was my action that caused all this mess. I should be put to trial – crimes against humanity – and forced to walk the crossroads till I find repentance.

It began several years ago when a bicycle-riding 12 year old almost ran over a middle-aged woman on 6th and Market. “Watch out, kid!” I yelled at him.

“Fuck you, bitch,” he yelled back. Then more, then more.

I kept walking, but he swerved back my way, taunting me then hocking a lugubrious wad of saliva in my direction. The bulbous loogie hung in the air for a brief second before landing on my back, hating its way through my brand new shirt I had bought at the Gap.

I chased the boy, ready to hate him with more words – club words that would make him bruise. I even called a cop. The peace officer hated the boy with a precise swat to the Achilles tendon with the old nightstick on their way to the squad car.

Does the Catholic Church Hate Women?

Jesus__magdalene.jpgCatholic Answers | Does the Catholic Church Hate Women?

The Catholic Church is subjected to a great deal of suspicion, if not outright scorn, when it comes to its treatment of women. Does the Church treat women as "second class"? In short, does the Catholic Church hate women? Few people would put the question that strongly, yet many believe the answer is "yes."...

Unfortunately, members of the Church have not always followed Christ as closely as they should with respect to the treatment of women, and this lends credence to the accusations. As Pope John Paul II confessed, many members of the Church, including some in the hierarchy, have acted—and sometimes still act—in ways that fail to express the equality of man and woman. As John Paul wrote:

And if objective blame [for offenses against the dignity of women], especially in particular historical contexts, has belonged to not just a few members of the Church, for this I am truly sorry....

When it comes to setting women free from every kind of exploitation and domination, the gospel contains an ever relevant message that goes back to the attitude of Jesus Christ himself. Transcending the established norms of his own culture, Jesus treated women with openness, respect, acceptance, and tenderness. In this way he honored the dignity that women have always possessed according to God’s plan and in his love. As we look to Christ at the end of this second millennium, it is natural to ask ourselves: How much of his message has been heard and acted upon? (Letter to Women 3).

Laughing At Or With Hate?

Red State Son | Laughing At Or With Hate?
dr.jpg

If it wasn't for Borat and Michael Richards, how would we discuss racism in America? Oh sure, there are police shootings and beatings caught on video. But those forms of institutional violence are forever with us and do little to shine new light on old pathologies and hatreds. And let's be frank -- they're not as glamorous as celebrities losing their minds and comedians poking at societal wounds....

Also, the main culture prefers focusing on the kind of racism that doesn't call the system into question. Instead, we examine a particular person caught in an awkward or compromised position, as if they are some archiac exception to our wonderful, people-loving democracy. This is especially the case with Richards, whose racist outburst at LA's Laugh Factory is still being talked about and denounced, with Richards assuming the role of the country's main bigot, or at least the present symbol of white contempt for The Other....

Thanks to Richards, there is a renewed drive to get everyone, white and black, to cease saying "nigger," regardless of context. The Laugh Factory has banned the word, which is not surprising, given the bad publicity the club has received. But how does a ban on that or any other racial or sexual epithet change matters? Easy -- it doesn't. It does, however, give many people a false sense of comfort, for if one does not hear or read "nigger," then racism is on the run, yes?

Uh, no....

So why do people hate Hillary so much?

hitlery.jpgThe Chalice Blog | So why do people hate Hillary so much?

Honestly, she’s a little socially conservative for me. I mean, I’m down with “safe, legal and rare,” but criticizing violent video games is a little too soccer mom a position for my taste. She's weirdly conservative on flag burning, was a little too supoortive of the war in Iraq for me to especially like her. Like Bill, she’s basically a populist and populists tend to believe in legislating behavior. But then so do conservatives. We can’t know what Hill is like as a person. That said, I’m confused by the image of her as this ball-buster, because honestly, ball-busters leave cheating husbands. And I think they raise kids who are more screwed up than Chelsea Clinton, who at least on the surface seems like the best behaved and most stable president’s kid of my lifetime.

I get that Hillary is some sort of symbol for bitchy women, but I don’t quite know what she’s actually done to earn that reputation, particularly since her personal life offers a good deal of evidence to the contrary. Can somebody clue me in?

All you need is hate.. pah pah pabah bah!

You gotta have balls the size of paddle-boat wheels to be a gay Palestinian and go to Israel to participate in a pride march.

Palestinian_Authority_Gay.jpgHarry's Place | All you need is hate.. pah pah pabah bah!

"In America you have some tolerance and appreciation and understanding of what it means to be gay and to be a Palestinian. We're discovering the hard way it's not so acceptable here."

So said one of a group of nine gay Palestinian-Americans who had travelled to Jerusalem to attend World Pride. They didn't get to march in the end.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that they were driven from their hostel by knife-wielding thugs, one of whom said they were from the Waqf Muslim religious authority.

Later, when one of their group returned to the hostel to retrieve their posessions, he was ambushed. The attackers asked if he was with 'the homos' and then started beating him. The man who said he was from the Wagf beat him unconscious.

Last year, three men were injured when they were attached by a knife-wielding orthadox Jew.

Why do you hate me so much?

bibliomarket | Why do you hate me so much?

I have a question. Why do you hate me so much?

Was I ever in the position to choose what parents I was born to? No.

The family I was born into? No.

The genes I was born with? No.

The school I was sent to? No.

The native language I was first exposed to? No.

Therefore it seems kind of stupid to me that anyone should ever hate me, personally, the responsible, decision-making, can-steer-the-direction-in-which-his-life-is-heading me, for not being born deaf, for not having deaf parents, and for not having attended a residental state school for the deaf my whole life, and for not having generation upon generation of deaf relatives....

If you hate me because I won’t get an implant and rarely wear my hearing aids, nonetheless I don’t block you from getting one or wearing yours, then why should you hate me?

And if you hate me because I won’t bother to learn to lip read, and instead ask you to write to me when you try to communicate with me (assuming you can’t sign), then why should you hate me? It seems like such a waste of energy. Simply leave me alone. You don’t have to talk to me. I don’t have to talk to you. Absolutely nothing is lost if we simply and quietly pass by each other in the hallway. If all that we have to choose between is that and hatred, I pick silence.

Oy! The freylekh!

Ah, finally some sensitivity to Palestinian sentiment;

"If it was up to me, I would send the gay community, who insisted on celebrating in Jerusalem, to Sodom and Gomorrah," said Eli Yishai, one of Israel's deputy prime ministers and the leader of Shas, an ultra-Orthodox party that belongs to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's governing coalition.

Noting that Christian and Muslim clerics also opposed the event, Mr. Yishai told Israel radio, "If we cannot be sensitive to Jewish feelings, perhaps we can listen to those of other religions."

Tim Goodman. The Bastard Machine : Eko's dead. Let's kill more people on "Lost." In this order.

I used to dig it. I used to anticipate every new episode. I used to believe there was a plan and s tory being revealed. Now I just think they are professionally painting themselves into smaller corners, and when the whole floor is covered they just move teh walls and keep painting.

Here is Tim Goodman's list of who should die on Lost. Beware Spoilers.

# 1. Claire. She's pointless. Let Desmond raise that baby. He'd at least save it.

# 2. Sawyer. Enough already. The accent and the nicknames are more annoying now than ever. Too much screen time. Shoot him in the eye, Freckles.

# 3. The Others. Boooooo-ring.

# 4. The Tailies. I think one of them is left. Hey, thanks for stealing Season 2. You owe me 22 hours.

I hate Saturday Night Live

It isn't funny. It isn't good. The actors always seem terrified and like they are just cold-reading the lines off of cue cards. The sketches haven't had teeth since Lorne Michaels came back to the show and they are too obsessed with creating shitty one-dimensional characters they milk every damn show.

Or maybe not. I stopped watching it years ago.

Here is what Tim Goodman, TV critic of the SF Chronicle and proud wearer of the Cranky Pants has to say about it:

It has been interesting for the past two years how Jon Stewart and "The Daily Show" are both light years funnier than anyone on "Saturday Night Live" and any skit you could even remember as a comparison. This year, Stephen Colbert and "The Colbert Report" were added to that list of topical shows funnier and more relevant than "SNL." But even if you haven't consciously acknowledged the comedic shift, think about this: Politics is funnier than pop culture these days, and that truth is driving the aforementioned truism about "The Daily Show" versus "SNL." For some time now, "SNL" hasn't had anyone who could really nail politics, be it sketch form or on "Weekend Update."

How much more material do you need beyond the Rev. Ted Haggard, meth, gay massage and megachurches? The jokes write themselves. "SNL" has also been asleep at the laptop on the Iraq war issue, never establishing itself as the go-to place for war jokes. Talk about your quagmire. We should all be ashamed that our national political situation isn't far easier fare for most comics and that what we're left with is asinine pop culture references that were only funny a few minutes after they happened on YouTube.

Michigan will demonstrate its national leadership in race hatred tomorrow

Michigan Daily (University of Michigan) | Alternative poll: Prop 2 sure to pass | Political expert predicts initiative will pass with almost 70 percent
ku-klux-klan.jpg

One political consultant with a history of correctly predicting ballot proposals while others miss the mark is predicting a dim future for affirmative action in Michigan.

Proposal 2 will pass by a large margin tomorrow despite a recent poll showing the ballot proposal trailing by 10 percentage points among Michigan voters, said Mark Grebner, founder of Lansing-based Practical Political Consulting, in an interview with Inside Michigan Politics....

In an attempt to recreate the environment voters face, Grebner has developed his own technique for polling ballot questions. Instead of conducting phone polls, Grebner mails dummy ballots to targeted areas around the state and lets his subjects fill them out in their own homes. Under this method, the voters are under no pressure to avoid sounding racist like they would on the phone, because the dummy ballots are anonymous....

"You need to let people be as bigoted as they really are," he said.

Johns Hopkins University officials suspended the Sigma Chi fraternity this afternoon pending an investigation into a "Halloween in the Hood" party many students are calling racist.

blackface.jpgStudent members of the university's Black Students Union protested the Sigma Chi fraternity party that was shut down by a university official early Sunday morning. The party was closed down after the students produced photographs of a skeleton pirate dangling from a rope noose on the roof of the fraternity's house on the 200 block of 33rd Street.

Holding up signs such as "Lynching is not a joke" and "Ban Sigma Chi," more than 30 students stood on Charles Street today holding up photographs from the party and distributing copies of an invitation to the party. The invitation posted on the Web site Facebook described Baltimore as "the hiv pit" and encouraged attendees to wear "regional clothing from our locale" such as "bling bling ice ice, grills," and "hoochie hoops."

"hey ma, they use to kill Jews on Halloween"

What I didn't know was the history of Halloween. It has deplorable, ugly elements. I would deck the house full out in Halloween decoration -- but it was my kids who came home years ago and said. "hey ma, they use to kill Jews on Halloween. It's a pagan holiday." Apparently Halloween was a night when many pogroms would occur against Jews.

One of the ways that we know about the mobs and the lynchings is that photographs were taken. Photographs were taken, and then they were turned into postcards, which were sent through the U.S. mail. Imagine. The Comstock laws made it illegal to mail erotic or lascivious or contraceptive information using the U.S. postal service, but it was perfectly okay to send trophy shots of what had been done to other human beings by mobs.

With utter contempt for God, and for the voters of their state the New Jersey seven unanimously said that all who live in the confines of its borders must fundamentally agree to the moral premise, that what the Bible terms perversion, the voters should call healthy.
What's the real goal of the activists, the judges, and the radicals who seek to subvert a moral world view?

The answer is simple, no longer satisfied with practicing the unspeakable perverse sexual pleasures that their hearts seek in private bedrooms, they wish to be able to do so in public. They are also suffering from such immense guilt over the actions of their sexual behaviors because they know inherently that the actions they perform are in fact unhealthy - that they will go to any means necessary to try and shut down the voices in their heads that tell them it is wrong.

The director of the Iranian Broadcasting Organization of Music Production, Mohammad Mirzamani, composed a symphony dedicated to "the victory over the Zionist regime," and the country's religious Web logs were told to report on all the festivities.
