Poetry #152
(published September 18, 2003)
On the Dangers of Contracting Marriage
found and arranged by the Giant Squid

No insane person,
idiot, or person
who has been afflicted
with syphilis or gonorrhea
and has not been cured
of the same, shall be
capable of contracting
marriage.

(This section further
restricts the list
of those who may intermarry
by prohibiting the marriage of
feeble-minded, imbeciles
or insane persons
who have been confined as such
in any public institution,
without a certificate
from two physicians
that there is no probability
of transmitting their defects
to their offspring
.)

Draw from the text of the Michigan Law on Marriage still current as of 2003
